Major Research Project Experience in Antarctic and South American Climatology, Paleoclimatology and Glaciology

  • Ten research expeditions to Antarctica with the Australian, New Zealand and United States of America programs, 1984 to 2010.

  • Two field seasons researching glaciology on the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and ta reconnaissance field trip in the Cordillera Darwin, Tierra del Fuego.

  • Two season as Shipboard Glaciologist, One Ocean Expeditions, Antarctic Peninsula and Tierra del Fuego, 2017-2018, 2018-2019

  • One season as Shipboard Glaciologist and Polar Guide, Aurora Expeditions, Antarctica, 2019-2020

  • Research studies on Antarctic circumpolar atmospheric circulation and on decadal climate variability  over the last 1,000 years in the Subtropical Indian Ocean, Southern Indian and Southern Pacific Ocean  from deep ice core chemistry, 1999-2003.

  • Research studies on southern Australian and South African rainfall variability using Antarctic ice core data, 2001-2007, including a research expedition drilling ice cores in eastern Wilkes Land in 2004.

  • Research studies on recent wind field changes and increased snow accumulation along the western Antarctic Peninsula

  • Research studies on recent climate variability in Northern Victoria land using reconnaissance ice coring and chemical analyses at Cape Hallett, 2000-2001, including a research expedition aboard the US Coastguard Polar Sea.

  • Research studies in palaeoclimatology, glaciology, Quaternary glacial and coastal geology, to determine the Antarctic contribution to Holocene and recent global sea-level changes, and their effect on the relative sea-level history of mid-oceanic islands, 1985-97. 

  • Development, management and coordination of international scientific research programmes on Global Change in the Antarctic region, including past climate and environmental variability from ice cores, marine, lacustrine and coastal sediments, Antarctic sea-level contributions, marine ecological changes in the sea-ice zone, sea-ice processes, climate variability and ecosystem/biogeochemical interactions within the Southern Ocean.  Liaison and programme formulation with International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the System for Analysis Research and Training (START), the International Oceanographic Commission (IOC), and the Scientific Committee for Oceanic Research (SCOR).  Organised and chaired international scientific workshops and fostered international scientific and logistic collaboration.  Managed the SCAR Global Change Programme Office, and the START Regional Research Centre for the Antarctic and Southern Ocean, 1995-98. 

  • Scientific / logistics manager, glaciologist, and field co-ordinator of glaciological, geodetic and geophysical surveys, covering 3500 km of the East Antarctic ice sheet during a 1.5 year over-wintering expedition, 1985-86 Eastern Wilkes Land ANARE Glaciological Traverses, (wintered at Casey Station).

  • Conducted a regional palaeoclimatology program involving ice core drilling, stratigraphy and instrumental climate data to research recent (last 50-100 years) climate variability in East Antarctica; including spatial and temporal changes in snow accumulation, mass balance and sea ice patterns in Wilkes Land, Kemp Land and MacRobertson Land, and on the Amery Ice Shelf, 1985-89, (involved 2 summer fieldwork expeditions to Antarctica).

  • Coastal and glacial geomorphology, clastic and carbonate sedimentology, ice stratigraphy and environmental geochemistry (solute and stable d18O and d13C isotopes) studies to determine the Holocene palaeoenvironments and coastal evolution of the Windmill Islands and the evolution of the polar coastal ice sheet margin in Wilkes Land, East Antarctica, 1985-88, (involved 2 summer fieldwork expeditions to Antarctica).

  • Process studies on wind transport of snow, microrelief formation and dune stratigraphy, and on the relationship between topography and snow accumulation in East Antarctica, 1985-86.

  • Holocene marine glacial history of Victoria Land study, conducted field surveys of coastal and glacial geomorphology, in the Granite Harbour region, Victoria Land, McMurdo Sound, summer 1989-90.
